Obituary of Guy Harvey Winch
So. Hero – Guy H. Winch, 94, died peacefully on Saturday December 8, 2018 at the McClure Miller Respite House in Colchester.
Guy was born on April 7, 1924 in Grand Isle, VT the son of Harvey and Bernice (Harvey) Winch.
Following high school, Guy attended the Coyne School in Chicago for electronics.
He enlisted in the Navy during WWII, where he was stationed in Key West, FL. He was transferred to Norfolk Virginia Naval Yard and assigned to the USS Wisconsin.
Following the War, he settled into civilian life and on September 9, 1950, married Blanche Eleanor “Bunnie” Crowell. Within the next month, he was called back to duty for the Korean Conflict. He reported to Key West and served two years on the USS Gilmore, the same ship he was on when he first enlisted in the Navy.
When he returned to civilian life again in 1952, he completed electrical school, and returned to So. Hero with Bunnie and began his own TV and Electrical Business. Shortly thereafter, he and Bunnie had three children, Kathleen "Kat", David and Kevin.
He was predeceased by his son David in 1955 and his wife Bunnie in 1977.
In 1986, Guy married Barbara Stevens, who survives him.
He is also survived by his son Kevin Winch and his wife Bonnie of So. Hero, his daughter Kathleen "Kat" Winch of Sandy, Utah. He is also survived by his grandchildren Kyle, David and Willie, his step children Shelly Adovitch or Arad, Israel, Sarah Norris and she husband Kevin of San Marcos, California, Susan Emmons Poss of Portland, Or.., Rick Stevens and his wife Berit, Scott Stevens of Portland, Or. and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Guy was also predeceased by his sisters Elizabeth Bayley and her husband Luther, and Patricia Arey and her husband Philip.
Guy was one of the original 7 employees hired by IBM in the Essex plant.
Guy was very active in his community. He was a charter member of the So. Hero Volunteer Fire Dept., in the first class of So. Hero’s EMT’s, served as Town Lister, Justice of the Peace, School Board Member, Prudential committee member and operator of the So. Hero Fire District #4 Water System, and a member of several town theatre groups since the 60’s.
Guy was a scoutmaster and trainer, and an active member of the So. Hero Congregational Church, serving as Deacon, Moderator, Trustee, choir member and Sunday School Teacher.
He was a very active member of the Masonic community, serving as Master of So. Hero, Isle of Patmos Lodge # 17, 32nd degree Scottish Rite, District Deputy Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of VT and the Shriners.
He was also an avid sailor on Lake Champlain.
Visiting hours will be held on January 4th, 2019 from 4-7pm with a Masonic Service held at 7pm in the Minor Funeral and Cremation Center in Milton.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday January 5, 2019
at 11 am. in the South Hero Congregational Church with burial following in the So. Hero Cemetery.
