Obituary of Joseph Anthony Augostino

Joe was born in Winooski, Vermont on June 17, 1938, the sixth child of eight, born to Italian Immigrants Salvatore and Rosaria (Mazzatelli) Augostino. He grew up and was educated in the Winooski school system.

He was very active in his community, serving on the Model City Committee, was a Charter member and President of the Winooski Jaycees, was the Executive Secretary of the State Jaycees, and was a JCI Senator. He also served as a Justice of the Peace and was active in local politics and most recently a member of the Georgia Vermont Lions Club. Joe received an honorary discharge from the United States Navy Reserves and the Vermont National Guard.

Joe had a successful career with IBM for 34 years. He was hired directly out of high school as one of the original 50 Vermont employees at the Essex Junction manufacturing facility.

Joe was a faithful member of the Catholic Church and served in many positions including Eucharistic Minister, Usher and Altar Server. He was a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus, having served as a Third and Fourth Degree Knight, Grand Knight, Faithful Navigator, and Degree Team Captain for many years.

In January of 1970, Joe’s life changed forever when he met the love of his life, Barbara Carty Geoffroy. They were married a short time later on August 1, 1970 at St. Francis Xavier church in Winooski. Together, along with their four children, they made their homes in Winooski, Essex Junction and on Georgia Shore.

Family was the most important thing to Joe. He made the transition readily from dedicated son caring for his elderly parents to dedicated husband and father. Later in life, he was blessed as “Papa” to his seven grandchildren. He found the most enjoyment in family gatherings at home on the lake.

No one was a stranger to Joe. He had a natural ability to connect with everyone he met, and he established lifelong friendships. He continued his personal ministry of serving others in need by delivering meals on wheels, visiting convalescents, and volunteering for numerous charitable events.

Joe is survived by his wife Barbara of 47 years, their children Suzanne Geoffroy (Jim Sackett), Paula Henry (Patrick), Karen Barrie and Brian Augostino (Emily Morris), and his grandchildren, Matthew, Alyson and Andrew Barrie, Sophia and Grace Augostino, and Thomas and Kate Henry.

He is also survived by his siblings Frances McKenna, Anna Stoll, Patrick (Arline), Anthony (Nancy), and Victoria Lathbury. Joe was predeceased by his parents, and his sisters Katherine Dattilio and Mary Lawrence.

The family would like to thank the ER staff at Northwestern Medical Center, the medical staff on McClure 4, 5 and 6 at the UVM Medical Center, and the staff at Franklin County Rehab.

Visiting Hours will be held on Monday, January 29, 2018 from 4 to 7 pm in the Minor Funeral Home, Route 7 in Milton.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, January 30^th at 11 am in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Winooski with Fr. Dan Jordan celebrant.
