Obituary of John A. Hill

John A. Hill, 88, of Essex, VT, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2021. He was born August 21,1932, in the town of Glover, VT to the late Andrew J. Hill and Jeanette E. (Richardson) Hill.

Raised on his family's dairy farm in North Greensboro, he graduated from Greensboro High School where he played basketball, baseball and ran track as his school was too small for a football team. John was in the Glee club for all four years and Joke Editor for their yearbook, a skill he practiced till the end.

On a very cold evening, he married Beverly Grace Myott in the Second Congregational Church in Hyde Park, VT, January 29, 1954. Beverly predeceased him in 2004.

Early on, John worked for Vermont creameries. His work was interrupted to serve in the United States Army, leaving fond memories of his time in Germany. After his military service, John went on to work in the furniture and appliance business, eventually starting his own appliance repair service in 1957. To support his seven children, John worked multiple jobs, including the original Essex Center Water District and as an Essex school bus driver, eventually working his way up to supervisor. After completing his career in Essex, he moved on to a similar career in the Chittenden East School District, finally to shuttle driver for the UVM hospital, retiring in 2010.

John had a passion for anything transportation related; vintage cars, planes, farm tractors, steam engines, space travel. His exploration interest inspired him and his wife Beverly to visit all 251 towns in Vermont. They were very proud of completing all destinations as participants in The Vermont 251 Club, https://vt251.com/

John is survived by his children, Dawn Hill-Fleury of Essex, Kim DeForge-Cronin of Colchester, Scott Hill and his wife Jackie of Essex, Julie Barbour and her husband Jeff of Jericho, Beth Gordon of Jericho, John Hill II and his wife Lorraine of Essex. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, and by his sister, Eleanor Collier of Barre, VT, brother David Hill and his partner Linda Dickey of Hardwick, VT.

He was predeceased by his son Greg Hill who is survived by his wife Janet of Georgia, VT.

No memorial events are currently planned. A private family burial will take place in the spring.
