This is really sad. I was his student at UNIS from 1976 to 1979, when I graduated. Dr. Szell was my most favorite UNIS (and non-UNIS) teacher. He encouraged me to be inquisitive and have joy in whatever I do - things I have never forgotten. I remember how he used to encourage us "to use our sitting muscles" to study. He also taught me how to make NI3 (nitrogen tri-iodide), a contact explosive, prior to a weekend trip to Clayton Farms. I put it on the bedsprings there and had great fun when one of the students set it off when he jumped on the bed. Dr.Szell had that childish joy in his eyes when I told him about this. Subsequently, when I was a Resident in Pediatrics at Cook County Hospital in Chicago in the early 90's, I attended a conference in Rhode Island. At that time, I rented a car and drove up to Essex Junction, Vermont to see him - he took me to lunch. That was the last time I saw him, but I did speak with him a few years later. Dr. Szell was an incredible kind of rare teacher who had a profound impact on his students. RIP, Dr. Szell - you made the world a better place. As one of his countless grateful students, I am moved to share my ever vivid and fond memories of Dr. Szell. He was a lovely, warm hearted man and an inspiring teacher. That he continues to bring a smile to my face 50 years later is it testament to his humanity, decency, intellect and influence. He was a direct contributor to my passion for science, and I remain grateful to him in this latter phase of my career as a cardiologist. Our class of 73 at UNIS has shared a collective appreciation over one of his legacies:“Similis simili gaudet”, which all seemed to remember. Dr. Szell, thank you! I will always feel lucky to have been your student.
Dan Leonard UNIS ‘73.

Dr. Szell truly was an intellectual powerhouse and a gifted educator. But what I remember most is his huge heart and keen awareness. He showed me so mu ch kindness and encouragement over the years. Reassuring me when I don't think anyone else knew I was feeling small or sad. I will treasure his memory always. Safe travels, and thank you for being such a gift.

It is wonderful to see the influence that this extraordinary educator has had on others just as he had on me. I attribute my academic success to many fine teachers and mentors but Dr Szell stood head and shoulders above the rest. As he used to say on this day in the 1970s, "happy turkistry".... he didn't want us to go through the whole thanksgiving holiday without studying some chemistry. His family should be extraordinarily proud of his accomplishments. I would be thrilled to retire with a fraction of the impact he can claim. Jay Rubinstein, MD, PhD University of Washington, Seattle

I only knew Dr. Szell for his final few days, but it was an honor to care for him and meet his amazing daughters. I had no idea how fascinating of a man he was until I read this obituary.
He kissed my hand one day when I was caring for him and I will never forget that gesture❤️❤️

Dear, dear Dr Széll. My sincerest condolences to his bereft family and friends - the scale of your great loss is in proportion to the tremendous gift of the deeply loving lives you have shared with this wonderful human being. Although I had the privilege of being his student for only 3 years (September 1970-June 1973), for a <gasp!> full 50 lucky years, Dr Széll has brightened my heart and made the world a better, warmer and more hopeful place. It took only a handful of inspired lessons from Dr Széll during a 10th grade science survey course at UNIS for me to realise in panic that I had made a disastrous error (in not having previously signed up to the 'Higher Level' Chemistry course). Devoted teacher that he was, Dr Széll generously spent many hours of his own time, after the end of the normal teaching day – over several months, brilliantly 'catching me up' with classmates who had had better foresight. This continued until he deemed me ready to join the rest of the class. The fruits of his astounding teaching skills coupled with his always firm-but-fair guidance lives on – and not only with me. His wisdom and the passions he imparted rattle on down the generations to my own children and grandchildren. His delightful and affectionate letters, ranging from tender and thoughtful enquiries about our well-being, through justifiably proud updates on his own adored family, right across to our shared fascination with and hopes for, say, solar-powered desalination and water purification to tackle twin global crises... how I shall miss these. I am doubtless one of many who are forever grateful for having met, known and having been be taught by Dr Széll.

Dr. Szell was my primary mentor as a chemistry student at UNIS. He was very supportive, while never bending his high standards. He and Jerzy Mirecki were the ones who got my head on straight (well, as much as it was and is). Dr. Szell in particular supported the unusual path I took through the UNIS program, and made sure I was doing well. He inspired me with his passion for chemistry and its wonder.
Jim Mayer, UNIS '75, now a professor of chemistry.

My sincerest sympathies to Dr. Szell’s family, particularly his wife, Klara, and daughters, Timea and Agnes who I still remember from UNIS days. Thinking back on seeing him in the classroom or lab, - his enthusiasm, energy and focus were infectious. He was so knowledgeable, driven to teach, with a sense of humor, kind and understanding. You never wanted to disappoint him, thus, he brought out the best in us. He advised me to major in chemical engineering as I was “too practical to be a chemist”. As he was the only person I knew who was both chemical engineer and chemist, he was my guide and mentor. He sprinkled Latin with his lectures, such as “Similis Simile Gaudet” or “like sticks to like” in explaining soluble compounds. Without doubt, he was the best teacher I ever had. As you see from my classmates and other UNISites’ notes, he leaves a legacy of devoted students.

He was the most amazing teacher I ever had. Not flashy perhaps, though he had a wonderful quiet humor, and he wasn’t easy—his “Above Mickey Mouse Level” problems could cause nightmares. But Dr. Szell radiated a love for chemistry, for teaching, and for us. We knew it, and we repaid in kind—we fell in love with chemistry and we learned a lot of it. He motivated more students to go on in science than any other teacher I have ever known. I would not be where I am now (a professor at the University of California Santa Barbara) were it not for his inspiration. Thank you Thomas Szell.

I came to know Tom late is his life at the gym we both went to, the Edge in Essex. I am a biochemist (Tom was a REAL chemist!), and we shared many interests in science. In particular, one of my heroes in biochemistry was Dr. Albert Szent-Györgyi, a brilliant Hungarian biochemist (and Nobel Prize winner) who essentially discovered vitamin C. When I learned Tom was Hungarian I asked him about whether he had ever learned about or met Dr. Szent-Gyorgyi. Tom told me that he took biochemistry from him when Dr. Szent-Gyorgyi was on the faculty of the University of Szeged! I was in awe that I knew someone who actually had stories and Albert Szent-Gyorgyi!!
Tom loved science, and it turned out that due to my job, I was getting weekly copies of Science and Nature, the two top scientific journals in the world. I'd bring them in to the gym and pass them along to Tom, who read them avidly, even in his 90's. I can only hope to be as intellectually engaged as Tom was in his '90's. I will miss my interactions with Tom, he was always friendly, gracious and intelligent in our discussions. As far as I can tell, life well led!
