Our heartfelt condolences to you Jahnke sisters: Ginger Ann, Jennifer and Alana and to your dear families. Your Mom was truly extraordinary; she made this world better by her caring presence and her contagious zest for learning.
We met Phoebe when she taught fifth grade, first to our daughter Becky and then to our daughter Emmy. We felt so blessed and grateful that she was their teacher.
Phoebe was an exemplary teacher and human being. She uniquely created space where learning was an exciting journey, an expedition where curiosity and exploration was more important than the rigidity of black and white answers. She invited her students, “her kids” to see the world through many other perspectives and to walk in other people’s shoes. While she nurtured each student to blossom individually, she also fostered among her students a sense of belonging to the whole group. They were a village in a global inter-connected world.
Last summer, out-of-the-blue, your Mom and I caught up over the phone. Being in your Mom’s good company felt like spa-time.
God bless your dear Mama. The impact of her life well-lived ripples out in ever-widening circles. And we who knew her, even if just a little, are blessed and fondly carry her warmth with us.
May Phoebe’s memory be forever blessed,
Mary & Don McLaughlin & Family

I'm so sorry to hear that Phoebe has died. She was a remarkable person. She was my 3rd grade teacher, and it was her that got me reading. She read 'Old Yeller' to the class, and I really wanted to read it again for myself. I worked with her at the Grand Union when I was in high school. That was a funny place, and she always had a great sense of humor. In the mid-90s we ended up being roommates in Portland for a couple months. Although she wouldn't let me pay rent. I remember her saying once, "I made some pea soup, if you want to gas up." When I got my own apartment she would stop by with essentials that she'd picked up at rummage sales. Once I got home from work to find a large box of eating utensils (enough to set a table for dozens) heaved over the rail of my first-floor balcony. Boy, the noise that must have made. I had no doubt about who had done it, of course. I wish that I had re-connected with Phoebe, but I am very lucky to have known her. Best to the Jahnke women, the most fantastic babysitters and bartenders you could ever hope for.
Most Sincerely, Corin Cummings

Dear Alana, Ginger, and Jennifer, So sorry to hear of your loss. We all learned so much from Phoebe. She was my son Randy's first grade teacher, and of course you all were our good neighbors. Phoebe did so well to manage your family, teach school, and even plant a garden. I admired her. Barbara Ploof

Dear Alana, Ginger and Jennifer:
I was so sorry to see your mother's obituary in the Washington World. I was planning to look her up this summer when we came back to Vermont. We taught 2nd grade together at Barre Town in 1971-72. We often drove together and I had dinner at your home with you three girls. She was so proud of her girls. I was privileged to have taught with her and to have known her.

There are no words to describe the sadness of her passing. She brought great joy and smiles to everyone every time you saw her. She was the kindest most welcoming person. She was by far the best teacher i can think of. To this day i have great memories of the times in her class and still have all of the newsletters while she was teaching me and my classmates. She welcomed us into her home over and over. She made it a great joy to learn!
Phoebe is loved by so many. i love her deeply. she was my teacher, mentor, and great friend.
my condolences to the family. Thank you for sharing her with us all.

One of my favorite teachers. Even beyond grade school I would go back and visit her. She always made her students feel that each one was special. I also loved seeing her at Grand Union. She will be greatly missed.

I met Phoebe when living in Burlington, VT. We were coworkers, and became good friends.
Phoebe had a rare bravery, thinking nothing of moving completely across the country every few years between Portland OR and Burlington, VT.
She was kind, and devoted to her family and friends.
My wife and I will miss her.
