Shirley and I met through our husbands' careers with Radio Shack. What a fortunate coincidence as we became fast friends who shared a love of public school careers, reading, writing and tennis. Through Shirley I discovered the joy of spending a quiet, comtenpative week on an island off New England's coast to begin the summer off. Without a whole lot of talk, we understood one another's love of the coast, the quiet and the restorative power of sun and space. Thank you, Shirley, for being a true friend.

Dear Greg, Asa & Angi and Jeremy & Jennifer,
I was prompted to look at the Milton Independent and found Shirley's photo.
I'm remembering our time together during her sessions. She would always
talk about her family members with joy. Focus on all the happy times now.
Hugs to all of you and know she will be near you.

Very sorry to read about Shirley. I had the pleasure of working with her at Milton for over 20 years. She was always helpful, friendly, and funny. I wish I could have made the wake, but a bike accident a few months back has left me unable to drive for a while.
My best to all.

Shirley was a great friend and colleague. As a librarian, she was so accommodating in creating special book units for Milton’s students doing major research. She made the library a truly special and productive place for students, teachers and parents. She deeply cared about the people in Milton and in her life. It has been a lasting honor to have known and worked with Shirley C. Towne.

My heart was deeply saddened to learn that my good friend, Shirley Towne, fondly known as ‘Shirl the Pearl’ had passed away. Shirley and I were colleagues at Milton High School for 30 years signing on the same day in 1975 and leaving on the same day in 2005. Shirley was a vibrant member of the high school staff—a fountain of knowledge as the school’s head librarian—she was always looking out for us teachers for anything that might supplement our curriculum and very often would show up at our classroom door before the day started with some good content-driven material. She was always there as a mentor if needed but more importantly as a friend. I will always remember her kindnesses and the help she extended to all of us with her keen mind and her sense of humor. She stood out as a member of the faculty for many reasons but one that I recall most often was her ability to be thoughtful or to think before speaking, or to ask what if questions as she looked at both sides of the issue before taking a stand—she was one of the ones who had the "voice of reason" on our faculty. She was a very special person who I enjoyed very much and I will miss her. My deepest sympathy to Greg, Jeremy, and Asa in their sorrow. Mary Ann Godin

I had almost 50 cousins growing up, but Shirl stood out as the wisest and wittiest , thats why I fell for her stories about the birds and the bees....told in tasteful librarian style at ten years old. May her beautiful mind that touched so many live on forever !
