Obituary of Judith Louise Schofield

South Hero – Judith Louise Schofield, 63, died peacefully at her home, surrounded by her loving family on Monday, August 20, 2018. She had pancreatic cancer.

Jude was born in Quebec City, PQ, Canada, on January 9, 1955, the daughter of Stuart and Jessie (King) Schofield.

Jude lived in Vermont for over 30 years. Having lived in Massachusetts and then central Vermont she always joked that she was making her way back up to the Canadian Border.

She graduated from Trinity College in 1987 and worked for the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington for many years as Administrative Assistant in the Department of Anesthesiology. Five Chairmen of Anesthesiology benefited from her wise advice and her skillful editing of their words. She served as counsellor and psychotherapist to generations of anesthesiology residents.

Jude loved to travel, most recently to Italy to see her daughter married in June. She was known for her shrimp on the BBQ (a staple at every party). She loved walking along the West Shore where she could take in the beautiful scenery of the Champlain Islands, but she loved the salt water best and was happiest with her toes in salty sand. She always had a beautiful flower garden and her meditation-equivalent was weeding. She was an enthusiastic volunteer in the South Hero community for many years.

She is survived by her longtime partner and husband David Smail of South Hero; her daughter Kaila Merrill with whom she had a special bond, and her husband Ludovico Terraneo of Sydney, Australia; and by her brothers Steven Schofield of Brockville, Ontario, and Robert Schofield and his wife Mary of Perth, Ontario, and their children Sean Schofield and Melany Blake.

She will be lovingly remembered by her extended family (Uncle) Allan Schofield, (Aunt) Betty Brown, (Aunt) Phyllis Vallee, and by many dear friends.

“Our death is not an end if we can live on in our children and the younger generation. For they are us, our bodies are only wilted leaves on the tree of life.” - Albert Einstein

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 25, 2018 at 11 am in the South Hero Congregational Church. A reception will follow immediately at the home she shared with David at 19 Ferry Road.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial gifts be made to the South Hero Library Foundation, Inc. - 75 South Street, South Hero, VT 05486 - in honor of Judith L. Schofield where her longtime friends, Kathleen and Robert Swanson, have made possible the Judith L. Schofield Reading Lounge (to be completed next summer) or to C.I.D.E.R. - P.O. Box 13, South Hero, VT 05486 - where she was an enthusiastic and beloved volunteer at The Neighbors luncheon program at the South Hero Congregational Church.
