I am so sorry to hear of Joan's passing. I spent so much time with Joanie during middle school and in to high school. I loved her passion for life and her optimism, her advice, and her wisdom. She was such a wonderful woman and I am sorry that time went by so quickly and I didn't reach out as often as I should have each time I thought about her over the years once I was in college and then moved away and once I started a family. Joanie will always have a special place in my heart - as I'm sure she will in all of the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her. May you rest easy, Joan. xoxo

Joan was my Godmother and I am so very fortunate to have had her in my childhood and young adult life. She was indeed my second mother and I owe her so much. It is sad that we grew apart over the years but I'm happy to know that she had many to look after her and her beautiful home. She was so generous, many if not most of my childhood memories involve Joan. I remember every birthday Joan and Kevin would take me to a store to pick out my birthday present, although it was always the hardest thing for me to do, it was so fun to run up and down the aisles to look at all the options. She made every birthday special. For my 5th birthday Joan got me an Alf cake and helped my Mom throw a big party, and for that reason, that birthday stands out amongst the 36 others! Joan and Kevin also took me to Disney World, making me the only one of my 4 siblings to have that experience. It was such a fun trip, and I think of it everytime a friend or relative mentions a trip to Orlando! Joan was such a great person and offered me so much during my life, I just hope to have that impact on as many people as she did. Joan suffered mightily in this life, and I hope that now all her pain is gone and she can rest in peace. Until we meet again, Joan.
Love,
Your Godson (Reg Godin)

I spent a lot of time with Joan in the 80s and early 90s when I was growing up. She loved children but tragically had none of her own. Instead of becoming embittered, she welcomed the children of family, friends, and neighbors into her heart, and I know that many like myself considered her a second mother.
When I think about Joanie, both her personality and her life experiences, two characteristics come to mind. First, that she was generous to a fault. She would willingly give anyone everything she had—time, possessions, or money. Some took advantage of her for this, but it never stopped her from seeing the good in people or in continuing to give. Secondly, that her capacity for hope was inexhaustible. Joanie felt hope in situations that would cause most of us to despair. She was diagnosed with Lupus as a young woman and told she likely would not live to see her 40th birthday. She made it to 40 and just kept going. She was diagnosed with cancer later in life, and decided to undergo treatment, when most would have given up. Joan’s life was one of chronic pain, but that never stopped her from getting up over and over again, never knowing if the day would be a good one or a bad one.

My fiance Tracy's grandparents lived right next door to Joan. Tracy went to Joan's every week to help clean and organize, for years. She also drove her places after Joan could not drive, and she regularly visited Joan when she was in the hospital or recuperating at Starr Farm. Joan helped me out when I did not have a teaching job, and I painted her house. Joan was so very generous with so many people. I am happy for her that her friendship with Stephen in recent years gave her happiness and company, and that she was able to be in the home she loved rather than at Starr Farm for her last days. Joan was one of the truly kindest people I have known. Rest in peace.

My deepest condolences to Joan's family. We met many years ago thru the Lupus Foundation . I was truly sad to see her picture when I opened the paper today. She fought hard and I am so sorry this battle was lost. I will always remember her lovely sunhats. RIP Joan.

My condolences and prayers go out to Joan's family and friends. I met Joan when she chaperoned my high school French Club field trip in 1973 to Quebec City. She taught me and my best friend how to crochet a shawl. I still have mine. May her suffering be over and her soul at rest.

So sorry to hear of Joan' s death. She was a nice lady, a fine successor to the " house above the School Street School" which once belonged to my great- grandparents, and a brave soul. Thoughts and prayers to her friends and family.

I met Joan when she took her young nephew, Kevin, in and got him involved in junior high basketball. Joan and I would man the time clock for the basketball games together. Later on, Joan and I became friends and like it said in her obituary she was such a kind heart. She did so much for people.
My life is richer for have known her.
