Ed was as the Irish say, "a lovely man", one of the great generation of Vermonters who would walk to work and home for lunch, always taking time to chat with his neighbors. My wife, Pam and I feel so honored to have known him. Like Pauline, an elderly lady who for years swept Maple Street's sidewalks every day, he took notice of everyone on the block, helping to keep driveways clear of snow with his tireless snowblower every winter. His self-effacing humor was part of the natural warmth he extended to all his friends, and he had a great many. He impishly told me that upon his return to San Francisco from overseas deployment, Stars and Stripes accorded him the homecoming headline, "St. Peter at the Golden Gate!" Indeed, Ed, now that you're with your fellow angels, may we all take a chapter from your book, extending daily kindness to others as you generously did to us.

Ed was the very definition of the word “genial”, with such a gracious, thoughtful soul. He asked little of this world and could light up over the smallest thing -including one of his own jokes. I especially remember his saying, if I paid him a little compliment, “Aw, you’re just sayin’ that ... ‘cause it’s true!”, with a twinkle in his eye. I regret that, as his health declined, I was not as good a neighbor to him as he had been to me. My family and friends join me in remembering him with love. Ed is sorely missed on Maple Street.
