Obituary of Mary Jayne Sharpe
Winooski -Mary Jayne Sharpe, 88, died peacefully on Friday, January 5, 2018 at Our Lady of Providence in Winooski.
Mary Jayne was born on September 17, 1929 in St. Joseph’s Hospital in Paterson, NJ the daughter of Gilfert and Mary (Kilcommons) Whinberg. She was predeceased by her parents and her brother Gilfert, who died at age 10.
On June 3, 1950 she married Charles Gordon Sharpe in St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Paterson, NJ.
Mary Jayne Sharpe was the true example of volunteerism. She volunteered in all of the communities she and Gordon lived and all the Catholic parishes she and Gordon were members.
She was active in PTO, St. Vincent DePaul Society, and Eucharistic Ministry and spent countless hours in the churches thrift shops in New Jersey, Cape Cod, MA and South Hero, VT., where she volunteered well into her 80’s. By far the volunteer experience she enjoyed the most was the several years she spent volunteering at the nursing home in Brewster, MA.
Jayne loved the outdoors and never met a flower or a vegetable she couldn’t grow or a craft she couldn’t perfect. She generously shared her talents and culinary expertise with family and friends.
Faith and her Family were her priorities. She thoroughly enjoyed and encouraged her granddaughters in all their endeavors and she loved and lived her Catholic faith every day.
After her husband’s death she moved to Allenwood Home and then Pillsbury Manor before entering Our Lady of Providence in 2014. It was here that she faced her “new reality” of dementia and found love, support and gained a “new family”.
The Sharpe Family will be forever indented to all the staff at Our Lady of Providence for their kind and tender care and send our sincere thanks for all they did every day to make her journey the best it could possibly be.
She is survived by her son, James Gordon and his wife Margaret “Peggy” Mahoney Sharpe of Charlotte and by her granddaughters. Kaylah Victoria and Chennah Elizabeth.
She was predeceased by her husband, Charles Gordon in 2012.
In recent months Jayne loved to tell people she was going on a cruise.
Bon Voyage to a true “Lady”.
Memorial contributions in Mary Jayne’s memory may be made to Our Lady of Providence, 47 West Spring St., Winooski, VT 05404.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, January 12, 2018 at 11 am in the Chapel at Our Lady of Providence.
