We worked with Jim in the early days of the VA's Burlington clinic and just learned of his passing. Jim was the consummate advocate, finding ways to help anyone with a need. He was easily approachable while always highly professional. We knew a Veteran in Jim's care was in good hands.
Ride on brother.

Be at Peace, Jim. When the end comes and brings people together to celebrate that life, the mosaic that is that person is - at least in part - revealed.
Many know you through the important work you've done with Veterans, saving them from the internal dangers after they've survived the battle. As one commentor wrote, you ended your sessions with "What have you been doing for fun?" to ensure that they weren't missing out on that important slice of life. Others of us knew you through some of the fun that you enjoyed. The two-wheel kind.
The hair-on-fire, bring-on-the-next-curve, "what are they gonna do, send me back to Vietnam?" kind. After 2,000 miles over five days traveling in the rain to Newfoundland, the sun came out and we had two beautiful weeks in the Maritimes. It's there that I learned your love of languages, your universal translation technique... "Oh, I'm sorry. You didn't understand I'd like a hamburger? Allow me to translate; I WANNA HAMBURGER!" Yet, we survived. And your willingness to accept new friends met on the road. "What do you think, Jim? Should we let this nut from Quebec ride along with us, share a room, etc.?" "Sure. There's two of us, one of him...we can take him if we need to." And when confronted with being mechanically stranded 1000 miles and a 13 hour ferry ride from home, even that is taken in stride and solutions worked out. Even another opportunity to make another new friend - with a pickup truck. Iggy sends his regards and condolences.
I recall one of the first times we had a chance to get to know eachother, around a picnic table at the Finger Lakes Rally, 19-who-knows-what-year... Playing cribbage, I think. I said something like "Dooley, huh? Got a brother named 'Tom?'" "Yup." "Really? Like in the song, you know?" "Yup." <grin> No kidding...
Ride on, friend. We'll do it up right when Sheila lets us know. A good ride to a good spot; one with a view. We've got it from here.

They measure light power by a candle light. I think some burn brighter than others. We will have light a thousand candles to even try to replace the light Dooley took with him. Sounds like a plan.

Dooley was a great guy, a brother in arms, a therapist, and a mentor. In the end I considered him a good friend, one who knew all my worst thoughts an demons. Still we could laugh together and bond over common interests. I was sad and happy over at his retirement, and thrilled to run into him on a deep sea fishing boat and the last few times at fly tying events. He still had words of wisdom for me, and we shared a chuckle or two. Each of these times a family member accompanied him, and it was clear how much they loved and took great care of him.
It is so hard to say goodbye to some who means this much to me. I know I would not be the man I am today without Dooley, he helped me to change and grow. He showed me how to get to the other side and live there. I can still hear him prompting me, helping me work things out. I hope I always will.
One small thing we shared interest in was westerns, so let me say about this final ride into the sunset; "be seeing you - pardner"...I could only be so lucky.
I love you man.

I served with the Medical Detachment in the Vermont National Guard for more than thirty years. We saw many soldiers deeply troubled by their wartime experience...many with daunting derivatives and life-problems in great emotional pain. We never knew Jim Dooley to back away from taking on a difficult soldier referral. He consistently weighed in where angels feared to tread, with dignity and Grace. He had an uncanny ability to engage clients that were nearly impossible to engage, and he was a willing ear for consultations regarding how to engage soldiers who had become emotionally lost. He was there for us throughout, and we will always remember him for that, his hopeful attitude, and all of his good deeds.
Blessings to the Family.

I remember when the phone rang and I answered. He said his name was Jim Dooley, that he too was a Vietnam Vet and heard I was thinking of coming to a counseling session for Veterans. He reached out when I needed it the most. Words cannot describe all Jim did for me, and I know many other Veterans as well. His smile, laugh, love of life and encouragement to go out and have some fun was a powerful inspiration. My deepest condolences to Jim’s family and closest friends. It was an honor to have met and get to know Jim. I will never forget Jim, he was a true hero, that left nobody behind.

I served with Jim in Vietnam and wrote a book about the war. Here is what I wrote about Jim:
"Captain Erb was also pissed that one of our more likeable guys, James J. Dooley, now of North Hero, Vermont, had to be taken out, badly wounded by a trip-wired grenade a few days before. Dooley was super-bright, talkative and constantly commented on the ironies of what we were doing. We liked to be around Dooley because he was one of those rare guys who made us laugh when there was nothing to laugh about, particularly concerning Captain Erb."
In a footnote, I have added: "Jim passed away on February 23, 2017, after a career as a mental health clinician with the Department of Veterans Affairs. He told me that there were a million guys out there who needed psychiatric care and counseling as a result of the Vietnam War, and he aimed to help every one of them."
We will miss him.
